2008 sees the IMI
conference return to the North, this time in the beautiful city of Durham.
Situated in North East England just south of Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham City
boasts a stunning location situated on a peninsular in a bend of the River
Wear. The magnificent 900 year old Norman Cathedral and nearby Durham Castle
are listed as World Heritage sites. The compact city, with its important
historical sites, is an undisputed gem of the North and provides the perfect
venue for this years conference.
I got off at Durham, intending to poke around the cathedral for an
hour or so
and fell in love with (Durham) instantly. Why? Its
wonderful a perfect little city!
These are the words of travel writer Bill Bryson who was appointed Chancellor
of Durham University following these favourable comments about the city in his
book Notes from a Small Island.
Durham has excellent transport links to enable even the most remote
(geographically speaking!) IMI enthusiast to attend. It is served by the east
coast main line so the train journey from London takes less than 3 hours. Air
links are via Newcastle or Durham Tees Valley airports, both around 40 minutes
away by car. For those of you who prefer to drive, it is easily accessible from
the A1(M).
The conference is to be held at the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County situated
on the banks of the River Wear. It offers sensational views of Englands
famous Durham Castle and Cathedral. The hotel, part of which dates back to the
17th century, offers modern amenities while preserving historic charm and
exquisite features such as antiques and original prints. The hotel also boasts
an indoor swimming pool and fitness centre for the fitness freaks and for the
rest of us, theres cocktails! |
