You will be aware the IMI has been working alongside CAMIP to achieve the statutory regulation of clinical photographers for a considerable length of time.
A successful application was made to the Health Professions Council in 2003/04 and the (then) Secretary of State for Health accepted a recommendation from the HPC to statutorily regulate clinical photographers. Since that time we have waited patiently for the legislation to be developed but the recent publication of two key documents by HM Government "Reducing Regulation Made Simple" and the Command Paper "Enabling Excellence" would appear to confirm recent suggestions that the Coalition Government does not support statutory regulation as the standard for healthcare professionals and an update about this was posted on the IMI website in March 2011.
IMI has continued to seek clarity on this matter from the Department of Health and a formal statement has been promised but progress is excruciatingly slow.
Therefore IMI is recommending that all members should write to their Westminster MPs to raise awareness of this matter as soon as possible and a draft letter has been developed to help you do this. If enough interest is generated then we are hoping that the Coalition Government may be forced to re-think its plans as it has done for a number of other issues.
For IMI members working in Scotland and Northern Ireland – you should be aware that statutory regulation is a ‘reserved’ issue (that is it is not being devolved to the Scottish Government/NI Assembly Health Departments) and so you too should write to your local MP.
