A tribute to Simon Tutty

Simon at the RUH Christmas party

Simon began his career as a photographer when he undertook his general photography training at the
Salisbury College of Art in the 1970s. It was in Salisbury in 1974 that he met his future wife, Kate. Kate was training to be a teacher at the Sarum St Michael College. They married in 1977 and had two children.

After completing his photography training, Simon began his medical photography career at St James', Leeds as a Basic Grade in 1975 and become Senior 1 in 1978, Head of Department at Frenchay Hospital Bristol in 1980, Sales Executive of Champion Photochemistry 1986-1990 and in November 1990 he joined the Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath as Chief Medical Photographer and Head of the Department of Medical Illustration.

Simon was a well respected member of the medical photography profession. He was a member of the Institute of Medical Illustrators, British Institute of Professional Photography, Ophthalmic Imaging Association and held Registered Medical Illustration Practitioner status.

He will be remembered as a friend and colleague who was always supportive and happy to help.

Typically for a photographer Simon was always behind the camera but eventually a photograph taken at a Christmas do at the RUH was found. His widow Kate has kindly provided a photo that she took of Simon in July 2011; both of these demonstrate Simon’s typically jovial disposition.

We will miss him.

Marie Jones, Salisbury District Hospital and Robert Toy, North Hampshire Hospital.
