GMC consultation - child protection guidance

This is your chance to have your say on the new draft guidance for doctors, Protecting children and young people: the responsibilities of all doctors.

We have developed draft guidance on this important and sensitive issue to help doctors feel confident in raising and acting on concerns about the safety and welfare of children and young people.

The draft guidance provides advice for all doctors, whether or not they routinely see children or young people as patients. It covers key components of the child protection process including: identifying children and young people who may be at risk of abuse, sharing information about suspected abuse, working effectively with other professionals involved in children protection, communication with children, parents and carers and acting as a witness of fact, and as an expert witness.

We would like your views on the clarity of the guidance, whether it addresses the right issues, and whether it provides practical and helpful advice.

There are three separate questionnaires available for you to complete – please choose the one that best suits you.

1. The main questionnaire asks questions about the text of the draft guidance. This is suitable for anyone who has read the draft guidance and wishes to respond.
2. A second, shorter questionnaire may be responded to without reading the draft guidance. This version has been designed for individual doctors and other professionals.
3. The third, shorter questionnaire can also be completed without having read the draft guidance. This version is most suitable for the general public.

You can read the draft guidance and questionnaires and take part in the consultation online at

The consultation will run until Friday 14 October 2011.
