Important Announcement - Regulation is coming – be prepared for it!

After many long years of work to improve the status of our profession throughout the UK, we are closer than ever to achieving our dream of regulation for medical Illustrators.

The IMI Regulation team, headed by Carol Fleming, have been working hard to prepare the necessary documentation that will allow the CAMIP register to be accepted into the Academy for Healthcare Science’s (AHCS) main register, and also be approved by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This will mean some big changes to your voluntary registration, since the register will be part of the AHCS register which is managed independently of the profession, the cost will increase. The details of this have not yet been finalised, however IMI Council have agreed to set aside funding to help you with your transition to the new scheme.

There are some steps you can take to be prepared for this big change.

  1. Ensure your CPD is up to date and that you have signed the declaration on the CAMIP site
  2. The AHCS and the PSA strongly recommend healthcare professionals to be a member of a professional body, so encourage all your colleagues who may not be IMI members to join us. It will work out advantageous for them to be on the CAMIP register now via IMI, than joining the AHCS register independently later on. They will also benefit from being part of our IMI family – Unity is Strength!
  3. Prepare for the IMI QAS scheme. Level 1 is not difficult to achieve and has enormous benefits for the accredited departments. This was the second of my 3 goals when I took over as your Chairman last October. I would now like to go further and pledge to ensure that all Medical Illustration departments in the UK achieve IMI Level 1 QAS accreditation by April 2018. This is not some idle hope, but rather my way of encouraging you all to ensure that your department is recognised to be run efficiently.

It is my intention to keep you well informed of the progress of the application process. The work is gathering speed and all parties are confident that regulation will be happening this year. I appreciate that there will be many questions, and your Council together with the Regulation team, will address your concerns as quickly as possible. Please drop me an email anytime.

Be prepared, Regulation is coming!
