Student Work Placements

Many IMI members will now know that the University of Westminster has put  together a new course, a BSc (Hons) in Clinical Photography, which is due to start from September 2009. This will be a full-time three-year course, giving the opportunity to school-leavers to study and qualify for the profession. It is anticipated that graduates will be qualified and practiced to a level which will enable them to become full Members of IMI and be eligible for inclusion on the CAMIP or HPC Register immediately on graduation.

Naturally, a significant part of the course will be practical training and this will take place both in simulated clinical situations in clinical skills labs and by means of work placements. The University of Westminster is therefore looking for medical photography and illustration departments interested in, and able to provide, such work placements, which will range from a two-week ‘shadowing’ scheme in the second semester of the first year (Jan–May 2010), extending to more involvement and practice in years two and three.

Currently there is more than twelve months before these placements would start, so there is time to consider and prepare for this opportunity. All these students would be potential employees and their skill level will obviously increase over the course to the point where they should be competent clinical photographers, able to join in and really contribute to the work of a department. The University of Westminster has considerable experience in work placements with other courses and many employers and businesses have found that such placements, monitored and backed by the university, have been highly beneficial to them and to the students. All participating departments are subject to the university’s quality assurance processes.

Geography will obviously be an issue for some departments but students will be expected to commute as required and even temporary accommodation could be discussed and considered, so please do not discount the possibility of being involved solely on the grounds of where you are in the UK.
