Information for Entrants

Eligibility

The IMI Competition Awards is open to all IMI members professionally engaged in medical illustration. Individual and team submissions are permitted, provided they are weighted in favour of IMI members (for example, in a team of two, both entrants should be IMI members; in a team of three or more, the majority of entrants must be IMI members).

To mark the unprecedented events of the past year, special awards will be granted to COVID-related submission winners. COVID-related entries are characterised by subject matter rather than the work being created during the pandemic. For example, COVID-related entries can include patient photography of COVID-related conditions, images/video documenting altered working conditions, PR work concentrating on the pandemic, etc. If submitting work that you would like to be considered for the special awards, please clarify in the description that the submission is COVID-related.

How to enter:

  • All entries must be submitted using the official online IMI Competition Awards portal.
  • The maximum number of submissions per entrant is five (this includes any joint submissions and COVID-related submissions).
  • All entries must meet the file type and specified size requirements for each category.
  • All entries must have been produced since 1st May 2019.
  • Online entries will be accepted between 1st April and 27th May 2021.
  • It is the sole responsibility of the entrant to secure all necessary patient consent and/or copyright permissions.

Photography and Ophthalmology entry requirements:

  • A high-resolution RGB or grayscale JPEG file (300dpi, 8 bit, minimum 4500 pixels on the longest side, Maximum 15MB )
  • File-naming format should SURNAME_DESCRIPTON.JPG (e.g. SMITH_cataract.jpg)
  • For COVID-related entries use file name SURNAME_COVID_DESCRIPTION.JPG
  • A short description should include details on the brief, the subject, and your individual contribution to the final submission (maximum 50 words).

Graphics entry requirements:

  • A high-resolution PDF file (may contain multiple pages)
  • Maximum 15MB
  • A short descriptor should include details on the brief, the subject, and your individual contribution to the final submission (maximum 50 words).
  • Graphics entries must be submitted as finished or final presentation visuals; supporting hard copies are welcomed and can be submitted upon request, please email awards@imi.org.uk for more information.

Video entry requirements:

  • A link to downloadable content
  • A still poster frame from the video, RGB or greyscale saved as a JPEG file, 1280 x 720 pixels at 96 dpi for display purposes.”

Usage rights

IMI reserves the right to the future use of all entries without prior notice or payment. Entries may be used for display, advertising and publicity purposes in relation to IMI and the Awards Competition (including the Internet and social media platforms). If the entry is selected for the Wellcome Award, future use may be included in the Wellcome picture library and subsequent distribution to third parties. IMI shall be entitled to call for evidence that such permission has been obtained.

Judging

Awards will be presented to those entrants who, in the opinion of the judges, demonstrate the best use of their skills as medical illustrators, the application of design, the effective communication of information and their visual effectiveness.
