The Institute’s awards are based on the recognition of excellence in clinical photography, healthcare design and clinical video and full details are circulated to members each year. The awards comprise of Gold, Silver and Bronze as well as a Platinum award, chosen from the Gold award winners and a number of special awards.
All past award winners are listed here, including older awards that are no longer given.
Entry for the IMI Awards is in May and dates and submission details will be published on this website. The Awards are presented at the annual conference each autumn.
IMI Bronze Award
This award is given to a photographic, graphic or video entry that demonstrates an excellent application of technique and an understanding of the requirements of the brief. Bronze award winners receive a certificate.
IMI Silver Award
This award is given to a photographic, graphic or video entry that shows an outstanding application of technique and an excellent understanding of the requirements of the brief, without the depth of interpretation required to attain a Gold award. Silver award winners receive a certificate.
IMI Gold Award
This award is given to a photographic, graphic or video entry that in the opinion of the judges, clearly and unanimously, demonstrates exceptional use of technique, understanding and interpretation of the subject in the illustration and fulfilment of the brief. All Gold awards winners will receive a certificate and £100.
IMI Platinum Award
This award is given to the entry nominated ‘Best in Show’ by the judging panel and is chosen from the Gold Award winners. If there are no Gold Award winners, no Platinum Award will be given. The Platinum award winner will receive a certificate, a trophy and £100.

Gabriel Donald Graphics Award
This award is given to the best art/graphics entry that shows innovation and extra creativity in the approach to the subject that lifts it above the rest of the entries, where it might not be technically the best but is still worthy of special merit.
The winner receives a certificate and a trophy. All entries are eligible for a bronze, silver, gold and platinum award.

John Corney Video Award

This award is given in memory of Peter Kilshaw and is open to all IMI students studying on a recognised course. Julie Dorrington Membership Award
The popular New Voices session at conference was renamed in memory of Julie Dorrington, who sadly passed away in December 2010. At the end of the Julie Dorrington New Voices session the audience will be invited to vote for the speaker who in their opinion gave the best presentation. The winner will receive the Julie Dorrington Membership Award, comprising a certificate and a prize of a year’s free membership plus a free conference ticket. The session is made up of short presentations given by at least six of our newest members who’ve never spoken at the conference before.
IMI Affiliate Organisation Award – open to non-IMI members
This award is presented to the best entry from a member of an affiliated organisation. Entries can be clinical photography, healthcare design or clinical video and are welcomed from the following organisations:
Medical Artists’ Association, British Institute of Professional Photography, Royal Photographic Society, Association of Medical Illustrators, Ophthalmic Imaging Association, BioCommunications Association, British Association of Retinal Screeners, Australian Institute of Medical and Biological Illustration, Association Européenne des Illustrateurs Médicaux et Scientifiques. The winner receives a certificate and £100.
