The arrival of Springtime sees a continuing increase in Institute activity with a couple of instructive sessions on the horizon to start us off. The first of these is a live webinar and is hosted by IMI Scotland in conjunction with Wex and Canon and will take place via Teams at 5:00 pm, Wednesday 20^th April and is titled “Remove the Fear Factor” – Tips and instructions for video shooting. The session will include tips on how to set-up video cameras quickly to cover most assignments and discuss future trends by using the latest hybrid stills/video models on the market rather than DLSR’s. This is followed on May the 10^th by Carl Rogers when he will deliver a lunchtime learning session, giving us the basics of vMix & Live Streaming. Carl spent 20 years working for Cardiff & Vale UHB as a videographer within both Medical Illustration & the Communications Team but now works in Bristol for Meet The Boss on virtual production live events. IMI Conference 2022

Looking ahead to October, bookings have been coming in thick and fast and are at a level never seen before this early in the year. Sharon Sutherland conference Chair for Glasgow says ‘The conference team have taken the remit and run with it, working hard to ensure there is lots of learning and networking and some fun included too.

There will be four streams this year: Adobe Masterclass, Photo/ Ophth, Graphic/ Video and a Development Stream with something for everyone.  We also have strong trade bookings and aim to include some shorter hands-on demo’s and training sessions in this area too throughout the day.
The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel (voted Scotland’s conference hotel of the year 2020) facilities are excellent and have been further refurbished since our last visit.

The social programme includes: a trip up the Titan Crane, Youth Club themed event on Friday night, (including a silent disco, shhhh) and live entertainment after the banquet on Saturday.  There are also several fitness activities planned for the more energetic delegates.’

Change of Editor

After four and a half years, Caroline Erolin is stepping down as Editor in Chief of the Institute journal. I’d like to thank Caroline on behalf of us all for all her hard work and efforts during this time which have resulted in some excellent papers and articles. The journal is an important part of IMI and the role of editor takes a lot of commitment to keep on producing issue after issue of high quality papers as Caroline has done. Tim Zolte has kindly agreed to take on the role and has been  working closely with Caroline during a handover period. I’d like to thank Tim for stepping into Caroline’s shoes and to wish him luck for what I’m sure will be a successful tenure. Whoever edits the journal is always keen for material from within the profession so, if you have a paper you’d like to submit for possible publication please contact Tim via this email address viscomm@imi.org.uk .

Professor Ralph Marshall

Finally, I was sad to hear of the death of Professor Ralph Marshall who played an important part in the development of our profession. Ralph founded the medical Illustration department to serve the needs of Welsh National School of Medicine and United Cardiff Hospitals and a training scheme for medical photographers which, in its various manifestations, has trained many within the profession throughout the years.  This short piece by Paul Crompton will tell you a little more about Ralph’s career and a full obituary will appear in the Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine later in the year.
