Our student membership is for students undertaking a recognised undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in medical illustration or a related discipline, and for students undertaking a relevant media qualification with a view to pursuing a career in medical illustration.
IMI student membership introduces students to their sector’s professional body and supports them through their studies to develop skills and improve their career prospects.
Students receive the same benefits as full members, including access to our knowledge hub, exclusive peer and professional online communities, and educational and training events.
Student membership is the first step of the IMI membership ladder; once you have successfully completed your course, you can apply for affiliate or professional membership, depending on the qualification obtained.
Membership requirements
You will be studying or applying to study for a recognised undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in medical illustration or a related discipline, or studying for a relevant media qualification with a view to pursuing a career in medical illustration. (Please note, student membership is reviewed annually and only available to new and affiliate members for the duration of their undergraduate or postgraduate course).
Join now – combining IMI membership with a recognised qualification demonstrates your commitment towards good practice.

My experience as a student member of IMI has been brilliant. I was previously the student representative and during my term, I found attending Council meetings and being part of the Institute very interesting. It was a great opportunity to meet other IMI members and I felt very welcomed throughout the whole experience. I would encourage all new student members to apply for this opportunity!
I presented as part of the New Voices at the Harrogate Conference in 2018. It was such a great experience and it really helped me overcome my fear of public speaking, as it is in such a supportive environment and the response I had was so encouraging. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who has not presented before. Jess Leonard Clinical Photographer
