IMI Newsletter
A message from the Chair, Nick White.

Welcome to the first of what I hope will be regular emails with updates about the Institute and profession. I’m still wondering about a name for these. So far, suggestions include ‘Nick’s Nuggets’, ‘Nick’s Nibbles’ and the more sensible (but slightly less amusing) ‘Email from the Chairman’.

Web Update

First, a few requests regarding the IMI website. It seems that some members have never logged on to the website so if you haven’t, please do; there’s a lot in there and it’s one of the major benefits of membership. We’ve had a series of technical difficulties with the website over the last twelve months or so but we are making progress with fixes and developments so you should be seeing improvements already with more to come.

A request also to everyone to make sure your details on the website are up-to-date, especially your email address (although if it isn’t you may well not be reading this). To ensure that emails from IMI come through to your work email addresses, you should contact your IT/eHealth departments and ask them to add IMI as a professional body and this should allow messages through the firewall which may otherwise block them.

While you’re logged into your account, please double check your details and make sure your payment methods are also up to date. If you pay your subscription monthly on your debit or credit card and you have renewed your card but not updated those details, this is especially important otherwise your membership could lapse.

CPD

One of the major benefits of membership is the facility to establish and manage your CPD activity online. The activity record is very straightforward and easy to use allowing you to record the activity, input learning objectives, add supporting documents and reflect on what you learned.

Find A Professional

A recent addition to the front page of the website, this should make it easier and quicker for anyone seeking help from a medical illustrator. It does depend on you ticking the button under My Account. It would be great if you could also tick for inclusion in the members’ directory too. allowing them to access your details. This used to happen by default, but GDPR rules demand that this is now opt-in only.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Bård Kjersem who has been awarded a Professional Doctorate by Glasgow Caledonian University for his doctoral thesis entitled ‘Point and Shoot: The Battle for Medical Photography in Norway’. Well done Bård, I can’t begin to imagine the amount of work that went into achieving that.

IMI Conference, Glasgow 2022

Next year’s conference in Glasgow sees a return to the traditional two-day face -to-face format. This year saw a one-day event for workshops and a trade exhibition as well as a separate one-day virtual study day. I’m interested to hear your views on how you would like future conferences and learning events to run. Please email me with your ideas!

In the meantime, a call for papers for next year’s conference in Glasgow has just been issued. Think about sharing your skills by presenting a paper – complete the submission form and return to the team by 25th January 2022.

Finally, as Christmas approaches fast and uncertainty grows about what we will and won’t be allowed to do over the festive period because of Covid, I want to wish you all a happy and relaxing Christmas and  festive break. I hope you all get to do what you want to do and spend time with the people you want to be with. Fingers crossed that next year brings a less stressful working environment for everyone.

Best wishes, Nick
