Certificate of Competence

Information for applicants

Application to the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) Register of Medical Illustrators is open to any practising medical illustrator who holds one of the IMI-accredited qualifications (click here for more details). You can apply to join the register through the AHCS website.

For those who do not have one of these qualifications, but can demonstrate that they have acquired equivalent knowledge and skills, an application can be made to the Institute of Medical Illustrators for a Certificate of Competence. This Certificate will be accepted by the AHCS as evidence of equivalence for the purpose of registration.

Equivalence criteria

In order to qualify for a Certificate of Competence, you are expected to demonstrate that your qualifications and professional experience have equipped you with skills and knowledge that at least equate to those of a registrant joining via the usual graduate route. The evidence that you must present in order to demonstrate that you fulfil these criteria is listed below:

1. You must have a qualification in further or higher education (e.g. City & Guilds, HND, first degree, etc.) in a subject relevant to your discipline.

1a. If your relevant qualification is in Further Education (e.g. City & Guilds or equivalent), you must have at least 12 years of experience working in the profession.

1b. If your relevant qualification is in Higher Education (e.g. a BA or BSc degree), you must have at least 6 years of experience working in the profession.

1c. There will be no discount in the number of years of experience needed for qualifications in other disciplines, or experience outside the medical illustration profession.

2. You must provide evidence of the relevant positions you have held in the period required in 1a or 1b above (i.e. 6 or 12 years).

2a. If you are in employment: submit either your current or most recent job description.

2b. If you are self-employed: submit a statement of your scope of practice, including for any positions previously held during the period required in 1a or 1b above (i.e. 6 or 12 years).

2c All applicants: submit a Curriculum Vitae covering your full working life.

3. You must submit a CPD record that meets the AHCS standards.

4. You must submit references from each of your current and previous employers for the relevant period of practice.
